The maternal-fetal interface
This illustration summarizes the reciprocal communication between the maternally-derived decidua and the fetally-derived placenta during the pregnancy.
Each box represents the tissue, cellular and molecular crosstalk that take place in the maternal-fetal interface for a successful pregnancy.

Placental bacterial infection
The placenta nourishes the foetus and supports its development and growth. The study on which the cover is based identifies the placenta as a potential route for foetal infection with group B Streptococcus, as indicated by an exaggerated in utero inflammatory response and poor perinatal outcome when the bacteria is detected in the placenta.
